Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s proposal to change the constitution with a view to obviating the right to a presidential pardon in cases involving child abuse was “a child protection measure”.
Máté Kocsis said Novák had made a responsible decision to resign and admit her mistake in connection with her pardon of the deputy director of a children’s home.
The president said Hungary had two “homework assignments”, one of which concerned the situation of teachers and the other the ideologies that wanted to use schools.
President Novák said her presidency was focused on the people of Hungary, adding that she was planning to “continue working as the president of each Hungarian” in the remaining four years of her term.
“We Hungarians must build on what has maintained us for a thousand years: the Christian faith and our love of the nation will show us the way even at times of change, trouble or triumph,” the president said ahead of Hungary’s national holiday on March 15.
The president said the Hungarian family-oriented model was under attack and forces were working to “prevent us from deciding how to raise our children”.
The president spoke before the city council after receiving the keys to the city of Lisbon from Mayor Carlos Moedas.
“We agreed that by starting the war, Vladimir Putin has crossed the Rubicon. Our common goal is to stop the war as soon as possible and have peace,” the president said on Facebook.
The president said “excellent bilateral relations” with strategic partners are even more valuable during the economic and energy crisis caused by the Ukraine-Russia war.
“We Hungarians … know that we must not only preserve, protect and pass on what was left to us by our ancestors, but also add to it,” President Novák said.
President Novák said Hungary welcomed Croatia’s accession to the Schengen zone and its recent introduction of the euro, and highlighted the importance of bilateral trade ties and tourism.
Zoran Milanović, whose visit comes at the invitation of President Katalin Novák, will be received by his Hungarian counterpart with military honors at Budapest’s Kossuth Square.
