Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said stability in Lebanon is crucial for achieving peace in the Middle East, adding that "Lebanese now have a fair chance to regain their right to a peaceful life for the long run."
Minister Szijjártó said on Facebook that this requires an extension of the ceasefire agreement, adding that Hungary "firmly supports" such an extension. He pointed to the importance of the presence of United Nations peace keeping forces, and added that Hungary contributes 16 troops to that mission.
Minister Szijjártó also called for reinforcing the Lebanese military and said that Hungary had made an extra payment through the European Peace Facility to that end.
The minister said the Hungary Helps Programme was contributing to seven development schemes in 2025, aimed to reinforce Christian communities in other countries.
Minister Szijjártó said he was scheduled to have talks in Beirut concerning Hungary's contribution to stability in the Middle East as well as bilateral ties with Lebanon, later in the day.
