Hungarian painting sets new sale record

A painting by Valéria Dénes has sold for 110 million forints, setting a new record for the art market

A painting by Valéria Dénes has sold for a whopping 110 million forints, setting a new record for the art market.

The piece captures the rusty-colored rooftops of a Bruges suburb and is reputed to be the finest painting ever made by the artist.

Due to the limited numbers of authentic Dénes’ pieces available - in total, a dozen or so have been documented so far - the standard price hovers between 30-50 million forints. This opened up new horizons for the seller, the Virág Judit Gallery which helped the piece reach record heights.

According to records, there has never been a sum this large paid for an artwork by a Hungarian painter.
