MPs have adopted a political declaration on the rejection of migration which also includes a statement in support of initiatives that assist migration countries of origin, paving the way for Hungary to join the post-Cotonou agreement.
The declaration sponsored by the junior ruling Christian Democrats had 143 votes in favor, 10 against and 23 abstentions, and it also states that once the country has received necessary guarantees that migration and child protection issues can remain a national competence, Hungary can join the European Union’s post-Cotonou agreement on relations with the 79 African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) states. It states that since aspects that prevented the country from joining the post-Cotonou agreement have been removed, parliament calls on the government to take steps to ensure that Hungary becomes a party to the modified form of the agreement.
