PM Orbán: EU member states agree to strengthen EU defense capabilities

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron and the Visegrád Four leaders agreed that cooperation between the V4 countries and France should be based on mutual respect

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has said that the main achievement of the EU leaders’ summit in Brussels on Friday was an agreement on strengthening the EU’s defense capabilities.

According to kormany.hu, the prime minister said that all EU Member States were in full agreement and declared their desire to participate in the emerging system.

PM Orbán stressed that if a European army is eventually formed, the summit will be written into the history books as its moment of conception.

The prime minister said that strengthening the EU's defense is important, as military strength can underpin the continent’s economic and political strength, and it would bring about consistency and a rationality in military procurement, according to the principle of balance.

PM Orbán said that the European Council meeting was also dominated by discussions on migration, but the focus was on cooperation rather than disagreement.

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron and the Visegrád Four leaders agreed that cooperation between the V4 countries and France should be based on mutual respect.

The participants identified the fields with good chances of pragmatic cooperation, PM Orbán said.

The French president made it clear that he would do all in his power to increase efficiency within the EU, PM Orbán added. He said that this may herald reform initiatives after this autumn’s German election.
